What we know about the county medical examiner’s investigation into death of man found dead in his van

A man found unresponsive inside his van has died, the coroner’s office in southern Illinois said Wednesday.

Authorities said John Pemberton, 44, of Waukegan, was found unbalanced on a sidewalk in the 1700 block of North Broadway around 1:30 a.m.

Tuesday.

Pemberton was pronounced dead at the scene.

His cause of death was ruled a death from suffocation.

A man who answered the phone at a home in the 500 block of West Albright Avenue said Pembertons body was in the van.

Police said they have not identified the homeowner as of Wednesday morning.

The Cook County medical examiner said Tuesday that Pemberts death was consistent with a homicide.

His death is the third fatal car crash involving a vehicle in the city in as many weeks.

The medical examiner also determined that the vehicle Pembert was in was not registered to Pember, the medical examiner wrote in a news release.

The medical examiner declined to release the name of the deceased.
