A medical examiner in Zimbabwe has found no foul Play in the death of a lion killed in a hunting accident last month, the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force said in a statement.
Zimbabwe’s president says Cecil, the country’s largest known lion, was killed by a hunter who mistook him for a leopard.
The lion was shot in the tail and chest after he attacked a female leopard cub.
The task force said on Tuesday that the investigation found no evidence of foul play.
The hunt, which involved two Zimbabwean teams, was carried out last month in the southern city of Kumbumu, where Cecil was killed.
Zimbabwe is a member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
